Before 1968, North Myrtle Beach consisted of a series of small towns: Windy Hill Beach, Crescent Beach, Ocean Drive Beach, and Cherry Grove Beach. The consolidation of these towns in 1968 was made to ensure good services to all the communities.

The Mar Vista Grande is located in the Ocean drive section of North Myrtle Beach. The Ocean Drive Section is referred to as “OD” and is the birthplace of the popular dance, the “Shag.” The Shag is similar to the Jitterbug and Swing Dancing, with smooth moves and plenty of fancy footwork. Every year, two weeklong conventions are held in April and September for the shag dancers. The Society of Stranders (SOS) bring thousands to Ocean Drive during these weeks and throughout the rest of the year. But it is the wide beaches which ultimately bring visitors to this area year-round.
